In this report, our partner Andalucia Acoge critically investigated the olive growing sector in Jaén, Spain.
The corporate food system has set the trend for rural development in Andalusia and, consequently, in Jaén. The European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) followed the tendency of the glbal economy leading Jaén to be one more cog in the extractivist dynamics of Andalusia and not to experience a constructive endogenous development. The province is specialised in olive oil production for the global market. An unsustainable agricultural system has been generated reproducing a lot of inequalities, a typical characteristic of extractive economies. The scenario presents a poor development of the province of Jaén at the expense of the growth of global centres.
