support this idea
The idea is simple, but very effective: the coordinators sets up a plan with volunteers. twice a week two people do a bike tour in my city (Innsbruck, Tirol) and collect food from big suppliers (bakeries, supermarkets, farmer markets) that would expire the next days (bread from yesterday for example, but no meat). These markets have to be visited once before to ensure their collaboration and fix the visit-days. Afterwards the food will be stored by the coordinator in a community kitchen and cooked (meals prepared from it) by at least 3 other volunteers. The food will then be distributed for free donations just next to the community kitchen in a public space at a set time every week. In the best case there are tables and seats available to eat at place. There can be cooking workshops, discussions, blind tastings and information evenings on food waste that frame the dinners. All could start in highschools, where I could do workshops about foodwaste and set up the project with the pupil.
a small team of volunteers, one person who receives a small payment per month or a professional certificate that he/she can use for social service certificate or internship, a cargo-bike and a community kitchen
Around one third of the food produced ends up in the garbage worldwide. Austria is an accomplice to waste and responsible for around one million tons of avoidable food waste per year. We fight food waste in a big scale with this idea. At the same time we raise awareness amongst the volunteers and consumers to fight food waste in their private households.
Because it is a participatory, fun project where all generations can participate, where people meet other people, sporting, cooking, cultural activities are part of it, all kinds of talents can be integrated into the project, it is cheap considering the great benefit it does and I gladly help setting it up as I have experience in very similar projects.
I participated and volunteered in many similar projects and they run amazingly well all the time! In my idea, I try to limit the effort for the volunteers to a maximum to also guarantee that the project doesn´t stop just for a lack of volunteers, which is often the case unfortunately.
